Who we are
We are a feminist fund that was born of a dream: that Central American women in all of their diversity would have their rights guaranteed to life, security, physical and emotional wellbeing, and economic, social and environmental justice, and to lead in the decisions that affect their lives and communities.
We believe in feminist and women’s movements, as they have made possible the rights that we now enjoy and those for which we will continue to fight. As part of these movements, FCAM was created with the purpose of contributing to their financial, political, physical and emotional sustainability, and that of the organizations and activists that embody them.
Through its feminist collaboration model, FCAM provides flexible and multi-year general operating support to women’s groups, organizations, and networks, and they are the ones who define their agendas, priorities, strategies and focus areas. We also promote spaces for learning and organizational strengthening, and we facilitate opportunities for groups to meet, exchange knowledge and reflect, and to connect and create alliances.
Through the work done by movements and organizations at the community, local, national, sub-regional and regional levels, we contribute to supporting initiatives that are vital for women’s rights from the local to international level. They include educational, awareness-raising, empowerment, promotion, lobbying, reporting of rights violations, and political advocacy activities, in areas such as: the rights of girls, adolescent and young women, migrant women, domestic workers, free trade zone (maquilas) workers and sex workers; rights of rural, indigenous and Afro-descendant women; rights of women with disabilities; and the rights of women with HIV, among others.
About alliances and collaborative initiatives
FCAM firmly believes that together we can achieve more. The challenges that we face as women and human rights defenders transcend borders and we need to create strategies together with our partners from Central America and other regions to mutually strengthen one another. This is why FCAM develops alliances and collaborative initiatives with other funds and organizations at the international level: to increase opportunities for collaboration, strengthening and funding for movements in Central America.
The Global Alliance for Green and Gender Action (GAGGA) is an initiative lead by FCAM in coordination with Both ENDS and Mama Cash. We developed a program directed at strengthening the capacities of grassroots organizations to advocate on behalf of women’s and environmental rights. GAGGA is the result of a collaboration of many actors that have been key in the program’s success: grassroots groups and organizations, NGOs, women’s funds, environmental justice funds, and other ally organizations. Together, we work collaboratively towards a common goal of creating a world in which women of all ages and conditions can exercise their right to water, food security and a clean, safe and healthy environment.
On the Right Track is a European-Latin American alliance comprised of eleven women’s funds from Europe and eight women’s funds from Latin America (including FCAM). Conservative and religious groups have gained increased space, strength and influence, which has resulted in threats and the repeal of laws that defend the sexual and reproductive rights of women and the LGBTI+ community. For this reason, the alliance’s objective is to strengthen feminist, LBGTI+ and human rights defenders’ movements, so as to preserve values of liberty and diversity in Europe as well as Latin America.
