Central America can be a better place to live, to relish, to be a woman and enjoy universal human rights. Women's groups are already taking action, but it takes resources and people committed to investing in the rights of women, who are ready to say "I am acting, because women's rights are human rights." Between 2000 and 2006, 1,398 women were murdered in Central America, by men who wanted to control women’s bodies and lives. Murders are not random, but are the most serious manifestation of gender-based violence that threatens lives and the security of Central America, and opposes efforts to make Central America a region more just, and more human.
However, there are groups of women who work daily to eradicate gender-based violence, a serious barrier to the construction of social justice and democracy. These groups are active in raising awareness about discrimination and subordination experienced by Central American women, which is expressed most emphatically against adolescent girls and young women, rural women, indigenous, HIV positive, lesbians and transsexuals.
For decades groups of women have denounced the violence, and currently there are young women's organizations throughout the region organizing to bring about changes in their families and communities, and to establish more equitable relationships between women and men. These groups throughout the region also work to improve public policy in their countries, to create a Central America that respects the human rights of women.
With the support of Fondo Centroamericano de Mujeres (FCAM), 110 women's organizations - mostly led by young women – have organized innovative and creative activities with other women and their communities, to promote and defend human rights.
Beginning November 22nd, hundreds of people have the opportunity to be part of this active and growing community, women and men who, through FCAM, directly support women's organizations fighting against gender-based violence and all forms of discrimination against women in the region.
